Education

The Lone Star Film Society is proud to present our year-round Arts and Educational Initiatives

Education is an integral component of The Lone Star Film Society (LSFS) and LSFS is expanding its education initiative to further enhance our goal of providing artistic and educational enrichment for the citizens of Tarrant County.

An important component of our year-round programming has been our Museum Film Series, new series at Cook Children’s Hospital and annual Focus Fort Worth Day during the Lone Star International Film Festival.  Through relationships with organizations such as KIDS FIRST! (Coalition of Quality Children’s Media), the Ringling College of Art Design, and Scholastic, we source entertaining content that is designed for educational purposes and to enhance the exhibits at partner venues (The Modern, The Kimbell, and The Amon Carter Museums).

Modern Kids – Summer Flicks Film Series

Every year the Lone Star Film Society partners with the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth to host a summer film series called Modern Kids – Summer Flicks.  A variety of films are selected and grouped together to be shown to kids according to their age group.  This series has short films, feature length films and even scary films for the older kids.  Modern Kids – Summer Flicks is also used as an educational tool.  Sketchbooks are provided after the films, allowing the kids to walk through the exhibits of the museum and sketch what they see and what they have learned from the films.

Quarterly Family Festivals Film Screenings

Each quarter the Lone Star Film Society partners with the Kimbell Art Museum to provide film content for the museums quarterly Family Festival.  These festivals are very hands on, allowing children to create artwork, hear stories, watch lively dancers, see films and explore the exhibits all for FREE!  Each Family Festival theme is chosen based off the current exhibit that is being featured at the museum and all the content that is selected correlates to the exhibit as well.

Day in the District Film Series

Every year the Lone Star Film Society partners with the Amon Carter Museum to present Children Films from Around the World, as part of Fort Worth’s annual Day in the District event.  This FREE film series is designed to inspire children, through many animation styles that bring stories to life.  Through vivid imagery and storytelling, these films help build an appreciation of art in all its forms.

Cook Children’s Hospital Film Screenings

In this new program started in 2010, LSFS works with the Cook Children’s Hospital to provide a film experience to patients who are unable to leave the facilities. Our staff members are on site to present the films and encourage discussion afterwards.

Focus Fort Worth Day

The Lone Star Film Society and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History present a free film during the 2010 Lone Star International Film Festival, Fort Worth in Sundance Square.  Focus Fort Worth Day provides an exclusive screening engagement for select organizations that are committed to improving the lives of Fort Worth’s citizens.  The Lone Star Film Society partners with these organizations to provide an authentic festival experience complete with a Red Carpet entrance.  This film series is part of the continued commitment of the Lone Star Film Society to provide artistic and educational enrichment for the citizens of Tarrant County.

Children’s programming is sponsored in part by Alcon. Content for the Lone Star Film Society’s children’s programs is provided by Weston Woods and KidsFirst!

Weston Woods: Weston Woods creates audiovisual adaptations that are faithful reflections of the books themselves. We will seek the best books from all over the world and adapt them in such a way as to preserve the integrity of the original. By doing so, we will help children discover the riches that are trapped between the covers of the books and motivate them to want to read for themselves. We believe that a child who wants to read will easily learn to read, and we believe that a child without reading problems will be a child without learning problems. Weston Woods is a 9 time winner and current 2011 winner of the prestigious “ Andrew Carnegie Medal For Excellence In Children’s Video”  with the award ceremony taking place in June 2011 at the American Library Associations convention in New Orleans.  We are also the winner at the prestigious WORLD FEST HOUSTON film festival in May 2011, winning 3 Platinum Awards along with a Gold and Silver Award for 5 of our films.

KidsFirst! is a project of the Coalition for Quality Children’s Media, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to empower children to make wise media choices and to promote quality media products that enrich their lives.  KIDS FIRST! also wants to help adults recognize the importance of teaching critical viewing skills to children, to help children identify and be aware of outstanding media programming, and to develop programs for children with special needs such as low-income, hospitalized or at-risk children.
